Jacob’s Pickles – Upper West Side, NYC

My coworker, Kat Minich, has been telling me about this restaurant by her apartment called Jacob’s Pickles for some time now, so when my girls Gina and Renée wanted to go to dinner last night I was so excited to suggest we try this spot out. Comfort food on a freezing cold fall day? Yas.

We arrived at the restaurant at about 7 pm and I was told there was about a 30 minute wait, but that they would take my phone number and text me when the table was ready. Love that. It was 30 degrees out so we hung out around the bar; it was nice and warm inside.

 

It was about 40 minutes later that we were seated. We were pretty disappointed that we ended up at a communal table, and also next to some guy that was speaking so loudly that I could hardly hear my friends. He was probably screaming because the music was unnecessarily loud in there. But we ordered immediately and as disappointing as our seating arrangement was and how little we could hear each other, the food was well worth it.

 

We started with the fried pickles, crispy artichoke hearts and the white wine mussels.

 

I was expecting coin shaped fried pickles, but they were spears, and I loved them. The outside was surprisingly crispy, it more of a tempura batter than a breading. Delicious.

The crispy artichoke hearts were very tasty, but I wish that they weren’t pickled, personally. My girls loved these, but they were a little sweet for my taste.

The mussels – to DIE for. Next time I am a craving mussels this is the spot I am going to! After we finished the mussels and soaked up as much of the broth as we could with the fries, which by the way were also super crispy and tasty, we almost damn near picked up the bowl to dump the rest of it in our mouths – it was that freaking delicious. We loved eating the dill with them, too.

My cocktail was pretty delicious – Autumn Blush. Very Fall. Very YUM.

For my main course, which I honestly shouldn’t even have ordered because I was so full after the apps we split, I got the chicken, bacon, egg and cheese. I could hardly even eat it at that point, besides the fact that it was obscenely large. I tasted as much as I could and those little tastes were amazing. The fried chicken was so crispy and flavorful and the grits were awesome, but I had to ask for it to go, and I didn’t even have room for dessert. Disappointment of the century though – they switched my leftovers with Renée’s 😦 so I was left with a completely different dish to take home than what I had ordered 😦 (it turned out her leftovers were amazing, but still, it’s the principle.)

The food was SO good here, but the music was way too loud and the portions for the mains were a little gluttonous in my opinion. It is definitely good if you want leftovers, and I do personally love leftovers. But as we looked around when we first sat down a table behind us had hardly touched what looked like a HUGE portion of fries with cheese, possibly poutine? And when asked if they wanted to take it to go they said no. My friends and I said to each other, they don’t even want to take that to go to give to a homeless person?? It is 2 days before Thanksgiving and 30 degrees out! It seems to me like a lot of food might go to waste at this spot.

 

I loved Jacob’s Pickles; I will definitely be going back. But next time I know how to order (lots of apps, but split a main with my friends) and I will make sure I am taking my own leftovers 🙂
